mayato Study: Data Mining Software 2009: Successful Analyses at Affordable Prices (November 2008)

In the past few years, the data mining market has grown considerably and become more diverse. As well as the classic data mining suites, which now also have their open source counterparts with comparable features, there are numerous specialized data mining tools for specific analysis tasks. Providers of BI software have in many cases integrated data mining functions with their products, too. A new study by mayato GmbH sheds light on 12 leading data mining tools by comparing features and functions.

In addition, Enterprise Miner (SAS), Rapidminer (Rapid-I), Analytic Framework (KXEN), and SAP NetWeaver Data Mining Workbench (SAP) were thoroughly evaluated and tested in practice using several sets of data. Analytic Framework emerged as the overall winner – mainly thanks to its phenomenal analysis efficiency – and was closely followed by Enterprise Miner, which came out top for quality. SAP NetWeaver Data Mining Workbench rated average overall, while Rapidminer was comparatively weak in terms of model quality and coping with large data volumes.

On the whole, the study shows that data mining software has now reached a remarkable level of maturity. Thanks to a wide range of product offerings, flexible price models, and new approaches such as self-acting data mining, more companies can afford to get started with data mining than ever before.

The complete study is available in German and can be purchased as hard copy or PDF for €199 plus value-added tax. More information is available on the mayato Data Mining Studies webpage.
