With HANA's development and aggressive marketing, SAP has put database technology - that used to make good money with SAP customers - companies under zugzwang . Not surprising, hence, that now also IBM is reacting with DB2 BLU in order to broaden their spectrum. The so far good relationships between IBM & SAP is hence currently discordant, as one can read from their blogs. Another comment here (in German).

Big Data in BonnWednesday, 03 July 2013
The newest developments in the field of data security and transparency were the main topics - albeit inofficially - at the Big Data Conference held by the branch association BITKOM on the 25th of June 2013 in Bonn. Around 500 branch & IT experts discussed application examples, data security, and future visions around the subject Big Data. mayato took part in this event, too.
In a nutshell, four essential insights can be postulated as a result of these talks and discussions:
- Big Data will sustainably change a company's information environment - within and beyond
All experts agree upon this. However, more questions than answers exist: how can Big Data be applied, how can insights from Big Data projects be integrated to real business topics, and what repercussions will these resulting changes have in a financial sense? Nearly to each successful project, failed approaches make out the other side. Even the most successful projects had to undergo their very own "path of tears", as a speaker appropriately elucidated.
- Nowaday's Big Data technologies (e.g. Hadoop) are technologically an essential step forward, but still are constrained.
The topics of data security, user support, and access interfaces (SQL!) are not yet ripe. In this, improvements will and must take place in the future in order to reap the maximum, evidently available potential.
- In conjunction with Big Data, the topic of real-time analyses will dramatically gain significance.
Real-time analyses that do not take place throughout single data segments anymore, but rather over the entire data are pushing BI tools to their borders (find out more in our mayato publications on www.mayato.com/bigdata ).The development of analysis tools & methods will have to keep up with the pace with the technological developments in around data creation & management. Wheras nowadays, work is performed with data samples and more or less valid random tests, models in the future will have to be developed throughout the entire data. This will sustainably change the analytic landscape - especially in the field of Customer Relationship Analytics.
- There are few consulting companies in the market nowadays that are aware of the aforementioned changes in a way that they drop their consulting approaches, taking on new, innovative ones.
Especially, the traditional, big consulting companies are critically esteemed.
Between the lines, the responsibility of companies when dealing with such huge and personal data was ongoingly discussed. This topic was fueled by the recent happenings related with the leaks from intelligence services, leading to a debate about the socially correct usage of data & information. Companies naturally intend to engage in this.
