The economic crisis is having less impact on IT investments in the BI environment than in other areas. This was revealed by a study on the potential of business intelligence in 2009, which examined the BI market in Germany and was conducted by market research institute RAAD Research and BI analysts and consultants mayato. Although 41% of the IT managers questioned say that the crisis is having a negative impact on IT decisions, 61% of companies assume that BI projects will not be affected by the downturn.

At 42%, tendency to invest in business intelligence is relatively high. Although manufacturing companies are suffering most as a result of the crisis, this industry is the pioneer in terms of implementing and investing in strategic business intelligence.

A total of 325 IT managers from manufacturing, retail, transport, service industries, and the public sector were interviewed as part of the study in January this year. The participating companies employ between 200 and 5,000 people, and in some cases more. The focus was on the upper midmarket, with almost 30% of those surveyed coming from companies with between 500 and 999 employees. Specifically, the study examined the business intelligence spectrum of data warehouse infrastructure, reporting, planning, and budgeting, as well as dashboards and cockpits.
